Becoming A Student of Politics (SS 09-10)

No Gravatar
I feel like I'm becoming a PolSci major already. I mean, my courses this second semester are mostly major subjects or if not, social science subjects. It made me feel that I'm finally approaching a new phase of my academic life. My second semester started very well, from enrollment up to the first day of classes. I feel that there is a very thoughtful but unknown power giving me these things. The force be with you too!
SS09-10 Courses
Communications III
Professor Anna Aclan
This course is all about speech communication. I'm afraid of this course since a powerful Being deprived me of oral skills. I'm not good in delivering speeches and such because I'm not a fluent English speaker. I also have a p and f speech defect. But I do want to take up this course since it can help me. I also find this useful as a political science major and someone who is planning to take up Law. I do think that this course will be able to help me improve my speech communication skills. It is also a practical course since lectures given by the professor will always be tested since students are required to deliver different kind of speeches. I think this will be fun!
Philosophy 11
Professor Paula Sioco
I don't think I will like this course. I like philosophy but not logic. Unfortunately for me, this course is all about logic. It requires, well, logic, which I think something that I don't have. This is the reason why I hate Mathematics. But I really have to take up this course since this will prepare for the Law Aptitude Exam of UP College of Law and for any law school for that matter. I will have to do my best since logic is not that friendly to me.
History II
Professor Sharon Caringal
I'm a history fan but not a history buff. I plan to take up something related to history in the future, maybe another bachelor's. Well, BA History is one of my choices when I was still in high school. The course is about Asian history and how it affects the world. It gives us a unique focus. We are all accustomed to seeing history in the view of the Westerners since they believe that their culture is more civilized and superior than that of the Asian. This time, history will be analyzed in the viewpoint of an Asian. I do think that this will be a very interesting analysis. This course excites me because we really have to do some readings. I love readings!
Political Science 100
Professor Jalton Taguibao
This is actually my third major Political Science course. But this is my first major that is numbered in three digits. That alone excites me. Hopefully, this course will enable me to think like a Political Scientist. The course is about political theories, tools and analysis. Judging from the course outline, I think that it is a very technical course. But I like anything that is Political Science. I will surely enjoy this course.
Political Science 150
Professor Josefina Tayag, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
In all the domains of Political Science, i admit that Public Administration is the least that i like. PS 150 is an introductory course in Public Administration. But this is also the field that I'm least knowledgeable. I find the course interesting because I learn so much from the readings and from the professor. I also find this course very practical. There are lot of things to learn from PublicAd, plus i really love to read new things.
Economics 101
Professor Chester Arcilla
We all know how much I love Economics, at least most of my friends knows it. And you also know now. This is my second economics course in the university and this course is all about Macroeconomics, one of the two bigger fields of economics. Economics for me minus the mathematics part is a very interesting and engaging subject. But we can't separate and isolate the quantifiable part of economics, so more or less, the course is interesting, engaging and challenging. At the end of the day, I know how much I enjoyed the lectures and I hope that this will be the basis for the grades! Haha.

Toxic

No Gravatar

My first week as a second year political science major in UP Manila and as a freshman (sorry for the gender insensitivity) block coordinator is so toxic. Surprisingly, most of the professors decided to start their lectures right away during our first day of meeting. And of course, i have to juggle my being as a student and as an FBC. But i'm not complaining, i have friends and it's so fun to be with them.

016.  Student Assistant

Weh. Nag-resign na ako as a student assistant of my department. Aww. I served the department for two months. I decided to quit being an SA because i'm not that good in managing my time. My free times would be used up for my FBC duties kaya hindi ko na talaga kaya. :)

Ate Julie: Mag-reresign ka na?

Cleve: Opo. Haha.

Ate Julie: Mag-aaral ka daw.

Cleve: Opo nga po.

Ate Julie: Ano ba gusto mo? Summa Cum Laude.

Cleve: Hindi naman po.

Ate Julie: E ano?

Cleve: Palitan po si Chancellor or si Sir K. Hahaha.

Ate Julie: Matagal-tagal na pag-aaral yan.

Ate Julie is the secretary of DSS. UP Manila's present Chancellor is Dr. Ramon L. Arcadio. And the present chairperson of DSS is Prof. Bernard LM Karganilla or Sir K.

017. Economics 11

Economics 11 or Econ 11 is Introduction to Economics. Since first year high school, favorite ko na talaga ang Econ. When I was in grade school, I read econ news in newspapers. Kahit di ko pa naiintindihan yung ibang mga terms dun, nagbabasa pa rin ako. It gives me the sense of being able to know the totality of our nation's economy. Kaya excited ako sa Econ11 namin.

My professor in Econ11 is Prof. Mariam Tuvera, a graduate of MSc in Economic History in London School of Economics. Haha. Two shots! Nung gradeshooler ako, gusto ko talaga mag-college sa LSE. Hahahah! Akala ko dati ganun lang kadali ang mag-college abroad eh. Kaya sobrang natuwa ako! LSE is now called the London School of Economics and Political Science. Naks!

Our first two meetings is typical but na-enjoy ko talaga ang first two na ito dahil nakaka-jive ko ang class at si Ma'am Tuvera sa mga discussions. :) Looking forward sa aming trip sa Stock Exchange in Ortigas.

018. Physical Education 2 - Philippine Games

Ayan. My PE is PhilGames. Exciting! Haha. I never had the chance to play in the streets when I was a kid kaya excited ako! Pero huwag niyo ako maliitin dahil i know the mechanisms of filipino games like patintero, langit-lupa and taguan. Haha.

Non-block ako dito kaya I'm somewhat silent (?). Talaga? Sana makilala ko silang lahat especially that one of my classmate here is my neighbor. Haha. I didn't know that he is a student in UPM. I didn't know he's existing too. Haha.

Ma'am Dioquino is funny and entertaining. :) Mukha siyang kalaro talaga. Yun naman talaga ang sabi niya. We have to treat her as a kalaro.

019. Humanities 1

Humanities 1 is Literature, Society and the Individual. Poems are boring. Gawwd. Katakot. Haha. But fictions are heaven! May it be a novel, a short story or a novella, i like fictions! Plays or Dramas are under consideration. It will depend if it's Shakespearean or  Greek. Greek play=boring! We'll be studying poetry, fictions and plays. I don't have a problem with reading naman,  i just find some works really boring. Haha. :D Pero dahil may Nick Joaquin sa reading list ... Okay na ako! More!

My professor here is a literature major, Prof. Rex Lago Paras. He's witty and i enjoy his comments. Haha. He's young pa kasi kaya walang generation gap. Okay, sana lang hindi ako antukin sa poetry part, medyo mahina ako dun. Haha.

020. Natural Science 2

Natural Science 2 or NatSci 2 is Foundations of Natural Science II.  It is a two-part course comprise of biology and geology. Unfortunately, geology ang nauna. I perform better kapag biology! Sayyaang! Haha.

I had an Earth Science subject when I was in first year. Haha. The whole subject is devoted to geology kaya may background naman ako. Right, Ashley? Haha.

Prof. Tabin II is my instructor here. Makulit. Haha. Let's see if i will be able to perform well in this course.

021. Humanities 2

Humanities 2 or Hum2 is all about Art, Man and Society. In particular, Hum2's focus is the visual arts. We'll be doing reviews, crtique papers and trips. I don't like visual arts. Kaya nga wala akong talent sa visual arts eh. Haha. May humanities subject naman ako nung fourth year HS pero art history lang yun. Sana art history lang 'to. Haha. Natatakot ako.

I can't draw or paint. Haha. Pero I appreciate the visual arts naman. All those paintings and sculptures in the Vatican, I want to own them! :D Intimidated nga lang ako sa mga IntarMed student there since the course is restricted to IntarMed students. Haha. :)

I don't know who my prof here is. Hindi siya nagpakilala eh. And oh, RH 303 ang classroom namin. Napaka-conducive naman niya at ang ganda ng viewing facilities. Sana lahat ng rooms ganun. Kahit may 250 pesos for every subject para ma-improve ang rooms. Haha.

022. Political Science 14

PolSci 14 is all about Philippine Government and Politics. This is my second major subject as a polsci major. Haha. And obviously, gusto ko ang lahat ng mga polsci subjects! :) Super excited ako sa PS 14 kasi paniniwala ko na ito talaga ang core major namin dahil it's all about Philippine politics. Masaya eh!

Three hours straight. Agh. Madugo.

And my professor for this course is Prof. Carl Ramota, head of the Political Science program. Iisa lang ang naririnig ko kapag Ramota ang subjects, TOXIC! :) Haha. Hi Sir! Our first meeting proves the theory that any Ramota subject is toxic. Hahahaha. He gave us a quiz about current events. Lucky for me, medyo alam ko naman ang mga nangyayari. I got a decent score. When i say decent, i mean passing naman. Haha! :) And we have to pass a topic proposal on our next meeting! Gah. Toxic nga.

But i'm sure na marami akong matutunan sa course na ito. Suupperr! Sir Ramota is a good mentor ... wala pang generation gap, i think. :D

Prof. Ramota is a graduate of PolSci program in UP Manila. I think he got his Masters from UP Diliman. I don't know which program. (Either PolSci or Public Ad) Haha. :) And he's a former EIC of Manila Collegian too. Toxic na talaga.

023. Social Science 2

Social Science 2 or SocSci Dos is Socio, Political and Economic Thought. It's all about the ideas of selected 14 Western Thinkers! Haha. Syempre, gusto ko rin ang course na ito dahil it's super related sa aking degree program. Its actually recommended for us to take up SocSci Dos as one of our GE courses in SSP.

Three hours straight rin. Nakakahilo. :)

My instructor here is Prof. Jalton Taguibao. He's my professor for the second time. Haha. He's the bassist of Sugarfree. And syempre, jive na talaga ako kay Sir Jal. :) Haha. He's class is actually more enjoyable now. At ang ganda talaga ng mga ideas ni Sir Jal. He will show you some obvious examples na hindi mo na-realize na ganun pala ang relevance niya. Good observant! :D

(Presented in no particular order)

024. Raven, an Adamson student

Okay. Haha. Raven is my younger brother. Haha. He is a Computer Science major in Adamson University. Syempre, inaaway ko palagi. Haha. May superiority.

Classes are suspended in Adamson because of a confirmed case of A(H1N1) Virus . The student was from the College of Science which is Raven's college. And unexpectedly, Raven's experiencing all the symptoms of the virus.

We brought him to the nearest referal hospital, the San Lazaro Medical Center. And guess what? Nagkita silang lahat mag-classmates dun. Lahat sila parehas ang nararamdaman. What can you say?

Innocent ’til Proven Guilty

No Gravatar

This day, Every Campus Nation Ministries (ENCM) sponsored a mini-pirated version of the 1 vs. 100. It was held in UP Manila, College of Arts and Sciences, Rizal Hall, Little Theater at around 4:30 pm. It has to be exact, I want to be like Tycho Brahe .. accurate and precise. =)

It was entitled as 1 vs. 50. Dien and me was chosen to represent the-ever-popular-and-famous block 4 of political science. Remember the P-O-Llll-S-C-I-Blk4 cheer? I really had fun hearing those. At first, I thought the game show questions would be relevant to the sponsor (ENCM), and it would be something like Who did the posting of Ten Commandments? I just thought it would be like that. Obviously, I was wrong. It would be something different and something comical to others.

The mob against the 1 was composed of different freshmen from different courses, the mob was actually 52 when it started. I was very nervous that time. I don't want to disappoint my block mates. I told Dien that we really have to reach the second question before getting eliminated. She agreed then laughed. "Nakakahiya kapag una palang tapos na tayo," she told me.  I agreed.

The brave "one" who dare to test his wits against 52 is a professor in UP Manila, also a graduate of Biochemistry in University of the Philippines. He looks like Yao Ming wearing glasses with thick lens. One of the mobs told me that he was a summa cum laude. WTF.

The first question was too easy, no one got eliminated as expected. The next set of questions got tricky and there was this one question that made the 52 mobs into 36. What is Dora the Explorer's nationality? Dien and I argued and agreed that Dora is a Spanish. "Ang itim kaya nya, she can be a mexican, and mexicans do speak spanish," a mob from the back told her co-mob. Dora is so pretentious. LOLS. And as i expected, Dora's nationality is Spanish. Thanks for my sister who insists on watching this gimikera. =)

Dien and I made it to the top 17. We won over the one. He didnt know whether Kitchie Nadal is from UP, DLSU or Ateneo. She was from LaSalle. And Dien and I answered it right. We got a 176 peso prize each. We reached the 3000 pesos money tree. I really had fun with this event specially with Dora the Explorer's nationality confusion. Remember, it is the Iskolar ng Bayan's weakness, Dora the Explorer.

When I got home, it's already 730 pm. My mom got mad at me since my dismissal is only 4pm. We argued. I silently argued with her. And she commented something that piss me off. She told me that I was just malling or nag gagala. I was so tired by that time that I got angry. She reprimanded me and took my allowaces, she told me that I have to bring lunch instead of money.

Moms do consider some laws but not the law of "Innocence Until Proven Guilty."

--------------

I am excited to the coming orientation of UP Manila Debate Circle. It's the wilingness that I have. It will be on June 30 and July 4. I don't have any plans of joining PoLiS. It's too boring for me. I hope I will be able to join the Debate Circle and the Indayog Dance Varsity.

Cleve as a College Student

No Gravatar

College is getting exciting for me. First days were always good but the following days are better. Being in UP is being Intellectually elite. It is something very definite to every Iskolar ng Bayan.

My first day of class in UP is very memorable. It's not because of new things, neither about new shirts nor allowances, it's because of the UP environment.  Several instances in my second day is when someone beside you will hand out a paper to you, discussing TOFI (Tuition and Other Fees Increase), and how the president made their life miserable. There are also flyers inviting freshmen to join certain organizations. And some papers regarding the University Rule (Prohibition of Joining Fraternities and Sororities for Freshman). In UP, you get to know the difference between life and fantasy, you get to know what is reality.

UNREALISTIC

I myself in high school enjoys a lot of malling, eating and group outings. These things were the very things that made me blind to the reality. I spend my money for usual luxury stuffs, eating in an expensive resto once a week, buying branded things, and watching movies.  My money is being use in a non-profitable situations. I enjoy life. I really don't bother about the risings of cost of commodities, Its very unrealistic.

REALITY

UP made me realize that there is more to life than material things. Immersion in an environment like UP made me think out-of-the-box.  There's no more luxurious spending because I now know the reality. Is it a good idea to know what is happening? or It is safer to go back to the unrealistic life? But I still can't take myself away from the usual spendings, I am still a teenager, enjoying life but never forgetting that I personally need to formulate solutions from the problems that I see.

----

One day,

mom: "Yung oble sa poster may sablay na pantakip"

cleve: It is because Oble had given up. This sablay that covers the body of Oble signifies sacrifices with limits. Its not like the old time where Oble wear nothing but a fig leaf. And that nothing signifies full sacrifice to the humanity. "I have nothing to offer to the humanity but myself"

See? I've been getting alot of realities.

UP is radical. Radical to make change.

Havaianas

No Gravatar

I've been getting a lot of views because of Havaianas. According to wordpress, there are 15 internet users today who use the word Havaianas to get to my blog.

That's good. So, to get more readers, i'd be posting pictures of Havaianas' flip-flops. These are the latest editions or variants of their flip-flops. If you want to read my previous post about the flip-flops, click here.

But I decided not to do it, the havaianas.com site is taking time to load. Every single click needs a two to three minute loading time. Just check the previous post, I ain't got time to waste, summer is over. And UP is getting me overloaded.

UP Ang Galing Mo (mp3) = UP Manila Centennial Freshmen Orientation

No Gravatar

*download link for UP Ang Galing Mo is at the end of this post.

--------

Since I am an official "iskolar ng bayan" now, it would be better if i start to write things in our native language. hays.

It started with the entrance of colors and the entrance of the officials of UP Manila. Present in the welcome assembly for centennial freshman are Hon. Shahana Abdulwahid, the Student Regent, the Chancellor of UP Manila, the Special Assistants to the Chancellor, Director of Institutes, Dean of Colleges, Secretaries of respective colleges, faculty, student assistants and not but not the least, are the freshmen.

The opening remark was entertaining, i was laughing the whole time. It was delivered by the Chancellor of UP Manila whose name is already out of my memory. His "pang aalaska sa diliman made the whole crowd laugh." He emphatically said that Diliman maybe the flagship campus but Manila is the top and premiere of all the seven constituents. He even said that UP Manila is the best of the seven campuses. There are lot of things that made us laugh, the comparison between Manila and Diliman, his side comments about the guest speaker (student regent) and things that are not usually said by Chancellors. The guest speaker isa graduate of UP Diliman kaya palaging nag eexcuse yung Chancellor kapag ina alaska niya yung Diliman. He even told the student regent to be seated and not to walk-out. The Student Regent, Hon. Shahana Abdulwahid was very amused by the opening remarks of the Chancellor.

Oblation scholars were presented, the ever-popular indayog dance varsity and UP Manila Chorale gave an intermission. Ah, there was also an intermission number from the Kulintang group. Its good to see that there are still students interested in playing Kulintang. The Indayog Dance Varsity was not very prepared as i see it, they made me feel bad .. the blockings, the timing, dancers were not synchronized, but I love the "sandaang taon na tayo step." And I would surely try my best to be in that dance varsity.

The incoming freshmen were introduced to the Chancellors by their respective Deans. Then, the Guest Speaker was introduced.

Hon. Abdulwahid stood up, went into the podium and something happened unexpectedly. (for them, its not!) They made a lightning strike (tama ba?). A simple rally to be able their grievances be heard. I was very amused in that thing. I wonder how it feels to fight what you believe for.  Of course, its still about the Tuition and Other Fee Increase (TOFI), they called it the "Commercialization of Education."

Abdulwahid's speech is very expected though I like the way she became Student Regent.

The UP Naming Mahal was played, several students did something with their hands in the last part of the song, i think, that is how they do it. Kapag kumakanta nun, kailangan mo atang itaas yung right hand mo then, i-momove na parang sa rally. It's amusing in my part.

I was amazed all the time.

My favorite part is when they  played UP Ang Galing Mo, i want to dance when i hear the song. LSS nga eh. It caught me, kaya kabisado ko na ngayon. I'll share a copy of lyrics and a download link of MP3 ng UP ANG GALING MO!

UP Ang Galing Mo!

Narito kami nagpupugay
Sa unibersidad ng aming buhay
Ikaw pa rin ang binabalikan
‘Di pa rin malilimutan
Ikaw ang UP naming mahal

Salamat sa iyong mga guro
Salamat sa inyong pagtuturo
Taglay niyo ang kahusayan
Taglay niyo ang karunungan
Hinubog niyo kami sa kabutihan

Sandaang taon na tayo
Lagi ka pa rin sa aming puso
Kaya’t kami sumasaludo
UP ang galing mo!
UP ang galing mo!

Wala nang iba pang maihahambing
Sa talino mo’t angking galing
Daanin man sa siyensya
Hi-tech man o kahit ano pa
Ikaw UP ang nangunguna
Sa iyong mga dugo ang kasaysayan
Dumaloy sa pag-unlad ng ating bayan
Sagisag ka ng kagitingan
Bandila ka ng kalayaan
Pag-asa ka ng mamamayan

Sandaang taon na tayo
Lagi ka pa rin sa aming puso

Sandaang taon na tayo
UP ang galing mo!
UP ang galing mo!

Sandaang taon na tayo
Dangal ka ng Pilipino
Sentro ka ng pagbabago
UP ang galing mo!

Sandaang taon na tayo
UP ang galing mo!
UP ang galing mo!
