A Long Sem-Ender Entry for A Long Semester

A Drama Mix

This semester has been the most productive semester of my entire college life.  I never imagined that I could do all these (as in all of the first semester shizz that I got into) in just one semester. This semester is amazingly wild. Juggling stuff, pursuing deadlines, extending limits, multi-tasking hundreds and thousands of tasks and managing the limited twenty four hours of everyday life--- I wouldn't be learning all these things if not for this semester.  Despite all the associated toxicity of this semester, I met new friends, rediscovered old friendships, deepened and strengthened existing relationships. But mind you, this semester was not an easy ride. I also lost some friends, missed some important events, lose in a game, and frustratingly experienced a one-way romantic affection. This semester is a complete season 1 of a drama television series. Seriously, I had a lot of drama for the first six months of my college junior year. And when I talk about drama, I mean real drama. But this semester ended with a cool and awesome mixture of sweetness, bitterness, happiness and calmness hoping that it would not be something like calm before the storm (hello impending November storm).

So Much For An Octopus-type Multi-Tasking

On Academics

No worries, except for those professors with grading systems guided by the favorite Irish Pub game (hello darts!). This semester’s coursework is quite stressful but I’ve learned many things. Aside from the fact that my courses this semester are inherently interesting, I’m fortunate enough that the professors who handled these courses are excellent in their fields (there are exceptions—emphasis on exceptions). My Political Science courses for this semester are five percent short of being perfect. I took up Comparative Governments of Selected European States (mainly comparative aspects of European politics and governments and European Union) under Prof. Carl Marc Ramota, Political Dynamics (lectures and readings on the State and Civil Society plus analytical approaches) under Prof. Risa Jopson, and Human Rights (all-encompassing discussions on human rights, theories and realizations) also under Prof. Risa Jopson. Then I had three non-Political Science courses for this semester. I took up Microeconomics (all that Gregory Mankiw shizz) under Prof. Allan Mesina, Science, Technology and Society (disappointing because of its bias to the capitalist school of thought) under Prof. Del Rosario and Life and Works of Dr. Jose Rizal (what? I thought this was a creative writing course?) under Prof. Benjamin Mangubat.  I have to admit that I enjoyed all my Political Science coursework for this semester especially the lecture about United Kingdom, European Union, social movements and almost all the lectures regarding human rights. However, I also have to admit that I was disappointed with two of my non-Political Science courses (that of STS and PI 100).

Now I Know What The Hell This Flag Is

On Student Council

This is my first year in the college student council, well, my first year in a student council. I was elected as the college Vice-Chairperson and I’m tasked with a lot of things contrary to the customary definition of what a Vice-Chairperson is (the one who just relax until he/she can assume the position of the Chairperson). Well, I’m the head of the Organizations and Community Welfare Committee of the council which is basically the coordinating arm between college organizations and the student council. I tried to introduce new stuff regarding organizations and council integration and governance stuff (Council of Student Organizations) but there are still lots of things to do-emphasis on a lot. I’m also the head of the Oblation Corps which is the volunteer arm of the council. I recruit, train and assign tasks to volunteers. We now have a lot of volunteers; I just have to find ways to maximize their talents and potentials. Also, under the new Constitution, I was also assigned as the Executive Council Secretary which is the most stressful administrative job inside the council. I have to monitor attendance, encode minutes, document things, file council shizz, regulate incoming and outgoing correspondence, schedule assemblies and all other secretary shizz. (I was thinking if I could apply as the University Secretary or the Secretary of the UP Board of Regents. Well, apparently, I can.) Aside from those tasks, I'm determined to assert my usefulness as the next officer in line, and I can safely say that this has been the most productive CAS student council since my first year in the college. We've been successful in our plan in reviving the student council and transforming it into a campaign, activities, and service-oriented institution.  Good job for the first semester! Agree? :)

For a more responsive, student-centered and pro-people student council next semester! Cheers!

On Activism

There are notable changes in my productiveness as an activist but there are also few problems that I've encountered this semester. First, this semester is a difficult time for any activist. What we have to do for the whole semester is to expose to the majority of the people that the new government of Aquino III is not different from the past governments. It takes courage and ability to do that. Talk about persuasive ninja skills. Well, people are still disillusioned and/or are somewhat hopeful that Aquino III will deliver some changes in the way that this country is being run. But, guys, no radical change will happen. Do I really have to tell people that corruption is not the root cause of poverty and underdevelopment in the Philippines? Do I really have to? This is a challenging task and I'm willing to take the challenge. Secondly, UP, which happens to be my school, is receiving its highest budget cut in its history. This is a serious problem for a university that is striving to be accessible and yet having limited financial capabilities. You don't have to study the budget statistics to know that UP has limited budget every year, and it is getting smaller year after year. And the university has no other choice but to compromise the public character of the university. Opposing the railroading of the WB and IMF-led commercialization of education in the Philippines will not be an easy fight. It will be a tough fight! But we'll not let this budget cut slide, right? Not without a fight! Prepare for a strike! Lastly, I've noticed that I was not able to attend any educational discussions for this semester. And I will change that next semester. FYI, activists spend most of the time not in the streets but studying in groups. We have a lot of materials to study covering historical, economic, political, social and cultural aspects of the Philippine society. Do you want to join? Let me know. :) But seriously, there's still room for improvements for the activist me.

On Relationships

By relationships, I mean all types of mortal (a relationship with a Supreme Being assuming it exists or with an imaginary ghost friend does not count) relationships. Friends, family, foes and even that special someone falls under this catch-all category.

I can say that this particular sphere of my life has been the most unpredictable, challenging and stressful (emphasis on stressful) part of my first semester. The relationship problems I've encountered for this semester are those that cannot be solved merely through an emergency meeting ala student council or a plan ahead of time. Problems in relationships are more complex than how-can-I-get-a-perfect-score-in-this-examination-problem or how-can-I-convince-student-organizations-to-attend-meetings-problem. It takes a lot of creativity, effort, courage, thinking and a whole lot of feeling.

I became closer to my friends, especially to my barkada. Our barkada faced many challenges this semester but we all got through it---but not easily though. The scars that we got through these challenges will always make us remember how stupid we are for letting some thing or some issues get in the way of our friendship. Ewww, cheesy.

In the case of my family, they are still the static, non-dynamic and passive aspect of my life. A pushy mom is not a problem, right? Or not. But I have to say that I'm getting used to it. But I'm still experiencing wavelength issues with my siblings.

I have a special someone, (ayiee)---though I'm sure that I'm not special to that person. I've developed something new this semester in terms of having romantic affairs. It was my first time to try to reach to another person and ask for affection. Well, it feels different to be at the other side of relationship. I have to admit that this has been the most stressful, major major challenge that I've encountered this semester.  But almost all of my friends believe that this problem made me change for the better. I agree. And that's more important. Lessons from mistakes. Check! Perfect.

Next Semester

Hey, Mr. Next Semester! Be cooler and more awesome, kay? More challenges and more lessons! I want another season of TV drama with lots of twists and unexpected changes. Promise me, you’ll never make me bored. Challenge me! :)

Risa Hontiveros is Not My Senator.

No Gravatar

Why?

On Education

AKBAYAN Rep. Risa Hontiveros and their allied youth groups in the different State Universities and Colleges are widely known for their anti-student stand on the issue of tuition and other fee increases. Closer to us, AKBAYAN and their allied youth groups in UP has taken the side of the administration in the issue of tuition and other fee increases. They are for the passing of the 300% TOFI in UP.

Hontiveros and her partylist believe that government spending on education is low. They are insisting that the government should prioritize education and follow UNESCO’s recommendation of allocating the 6 percent of GNP to education spending. BUT. But they were not there when students were fighting for a higher state subsidy. Another lip-service. Instead of uniting with the students in their call for a higher state subsidy, they are “parroting” the line of the administration that TOFI is just timely.

MY SENATOR SHOULD RECOGNIZE OUR RIGHT TO EDUCATION. RISA HONTIVEROS IS NOT MY SENATOR.

On Student’s Rights

She co-authored the fake Magna Carta of Students or the Student’s Rights and Welfare Bill. Instead of protecting the interests, rights and welfare of the students, the bill will limit these things. They continue to lobby this inside the Congress and in other schools through different activities. Deception. Last time I checked, “no one” attended the STRAWBS forum in UP Manila last year.

MY SENATOR SHOULD RECOGNIZE AND PROMOTE THE DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS OF STUDENTS. RISA HONTIVEROS IS NOT MY SENATOR.

From "Kailangan ng Laban" to "Magandang Laban"

On Agrarian Reform

She lobbied for the passage of a fake agrarian reform bill. She co-authored the CARPER Bill or the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension with Reforms Bill. CARPER is a fake agrarian reform bill that is worse than the existing CARP that will benefit the already rich landlords especially the Arroyos, Aquinos and Cojuangcos. Why would PGMA ask her allies in the Congress to immediately pass the bill? Because CARPER is designed to fail. Lands will not be distributed. She is not for the farmers.

MY SENATOR SHOULD SUPPORT THE CAUSE OF THE FARMERS AND THE OTHER SECTORS OF THE SOCIETY. RISA HONTIVEROS IS NOT MY SENATOR.

On Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza

She is “stupid.” Red-baiting is a cheap tactic. She parrots the line of the AFP that Liza Maza and Satur Ocampo are leaders of CPP-NPA. Can’t she just accept the truth? The Supreme Court of the Philippines already proved and decided that Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza are not in any way connected to NPA. This decision was supported by the United Nations and the US Government. Risa Hontiveros is investing on negative campaigning. Shooting other targets down to gain votes. Pathetic.

MY SENATOR SHOULD NOT TELL LIES. MOVE ON! RISA HONTIVEROS IS NOT MY SENATOR.

Tambalang Liza at Satur

On Traditional Politics

Hontiveros is a traditional politician. Proof? What can you say about her TV advertisements? It’s all about the mysterious and unsubstantiated “Magandang Laban.” What the hell is “Magandang Laban?” Hindi naman siya maganda. At lalong hindi naman siya kasama sa laban. Nahawa na ata kay Noynoy. Instead of presenting her plans or her platform on her Ads, sumasayaw lang siya at nagpapa-endorse sa mga sikat na tao. MAGANDANG LABAN?

MY SENATOR SHOULD PROMOTE PRO-PEOPLE PLATFORM-BASED POLITICS. RAISE THE LEVEL OF POLITICS! RISA HONTIVEROS IS NOT MY SENATOR.

On Tactical Alliance with the Liberal Party

Why is Risa Hontiveros with Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas? Why is she with Ralph Recto (EVAT)? Noy-Mar are rabid supporters of the US neoliberal policies. She and her partylist keep on denouncing the US neoliberal policies and E-VAT. They considered it as evil. Ito nga daw ang problema ng ating bansa. But what happened? Why is she with Noynoy and Mar? With Ralph Recto? What kind of tactical alliance is this? Makasama na lang. Pagandahan na lang ng laban.

MY SENATOR SHOULD BE PRINCIPLED, FIRM AND CONSISTENT. HE/SHE SHOULD ALSO PROMOTE A PRO-FILIPINO SYSTEM OF ECONOMY. RISA HONTIVEROS IS NOT MY SENATOR.

Risa Hontiveros with Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas

Sasama ka pa rin ba sa Magandang Laban? Risa Hontiveros is not the people’s senator. An opportunistic and fake nationalist leader-legislator is not what we need in this time of poverty and corruption. Sino ba dapat ang nasa Senado? ALAM NA!

Doon ka dapat sa Sure!

Matapang at Makamasa!

Summer Break (?)

No Gravatar

Well, it's already summer. This is my hottest summer so far. Ang init di'ba? Sobra? I have to leave super early or super late whenever i'm going somewhere para hindi masyado mainit. Pero kahit mainit ang summer, masarap paring i-enjoy ito with your friends and family. I usually go out with my elementary friends kapag summer usually sa form ng swimming outing kasama ang aking family. It's really really relaxing to go out kapag summer especially after a super toxic academic year.  My college friends, my family and I were planning to have a swimming na nga dapat pero it was cancelled because of my mom. She needs to attend a meeting that day. But that's not really my point here. This is supposed to be a SUMMER BREAK. Not just summer but summer break!

HEAT WAVE!

I won as the Vice Chair of the 38th CAS Student Council. And our term includes this summer semester. We just had our first General Assembly last Monday. Feel ko this will be the best CAS SC ever. Ang productive ng meeting and we were able to cover all the items listed in the agenda. We had a council workshop from the NUSP Chair Eisntein Recedes (Education Situationer) and from Student Regent Charrise Banez (UP Situationer). The council was also invited by the LABAN UP-PGH Movement. Mr. Ardynne delivered a 30 minute speech regarding the issue. At ang saya lang talaga ng meeting! Super fun! We're like close friends na even though we come from different pespectives. Masarap mag-trabaho kapag ganun! But that's not really my point here. I just learned na ang dami pala naming gagawin this summer semester. We have to man the SC Office to ensure physical visibility tapos we have to ensure na makapag-semestral planning na kami kaya madaming meetings. Aside from that, there are also outside invitations from NUSP and KSUP for council seminars. Plus another one from the UP Manila Chancellor.

Aside from the council work, I have to attend and be present rin sa freshmen registration and PDE weeks because I'm also part of the FBCP. I have to help the new batch because I love them like that. Mahal ko lang talaga yung FBCP kaya pupunta pa rin ako doon. And I miss working with them plus the freshies.

FBCP Training 2009-2010

Aside from the school-related works, I also have to campaign for KABATAAN Partylist. We're targeting for three seats for this election. Ang hirap nga lang. I have to double my effort lalo na when it comes to online campaigning. Ang loser ko nga since I was not able to message all my friends to pledge their vote for KABATAAN, Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza. ANG LAPIT NA NG ELEKSYON! Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza needs to be elected!

Pledge your votes!

Aside from those, I'm attending a 20-day Government Internship Program of our City because my parents wants me to. This is like a summer job because I will get paid for this but I'm not sure if I'll be given an office work. Feel ko this is easier than being a student assistant in UP Manila. We were told that we just have to attend seminars regarding different topics e. So, hindi hassle. I don't have to use my brain! But this is so time-consuming since this will be conducted whole day. This will eat much of my time for this summer and will eat my free time for council works, FBC duties and campaigning for KABATAAN Partylist, Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza.

NASAAN ANG SUMMER BREAK KO? Sana may summer class na lang ako 'no? I don't want to stay home the whole duration of summer pero I don't want this kind of toxic-ness. Rigggggggggggght? Pero I'm sure that I will be able to enjoy this naman. Gusto ko kayang pinapahirapan ang sarili ko! Gusto kong toxic ako! That way, I will be able to use my brain and spend all my energy para hindi nasasayang! I promise that I post a comment or my take on a current issue soon. Wala na akong matinong post! But I promise to make one soon.

Goodluck and may you all enjoy your summer breaks! :D

Don't forget KABATAAN Partylist ha! #152!

Please vote for #33 Liza Maza and #37 Satur Ocampo for Senators!

Of Planners and Plans

No Gravatar

Next semester, I have been planning to do many things. I even asked my friend Des Santos to make a deal that one has to follow its  to do list religiously. A fine should be given if the list will not be followed. One of the things in this list is to use my planner religiously. I'm liking the word religiously. I actually have two planners for this year. I was able to use them but I  got tired that I stopped using them after a good three months. I was disappointed. I want the OC Planner type of person.

UP Planner

I own a planner by the UP Diliman Centennial University Student Council. I bought it for 350 pesos or 400 pesos? I can't remember. I have this mild memory loss when it comes to prices. Its actually good and formal. Not very formal, just executive-ish.

UP Planner

UP Planner

I can't find a picture of a real sample of the planner in the net. I'm too lazy to take pictures of it and upload it on PC. It's just too complicated. I was able to use it as a journal. It served as a diary of some sort for me. It also served as my accounts sheet. I wrote my daily and future expenses there. I also tried to collect all the receipts just to make sure that all is written. But when my expenses got complicated and I can't keep track of my transactions, I stopped using this. Its easy to be lazy.

Blogberry Planner

I also own a planner from the Stradmore. Des Santos convinced me to buy this planner because it's suited to college students. I was convinced even if it meant another unnecessary expense for me. The looks and the features inside are so tempting. I bought the Stradmore's Blogberry University Lifestyle Planner. Its about 300 or 400 pesos. I can't remember.

PastedGraphic3.3JBBS0iJkj6j

Blogberry University Lifestyle Planner (Stradmore)

It's distributed by the ever-reliable National Bookstore. I bought the green one because it's my favorite color. I used it as my scheduler and my goal planner. It's useful for students because it's patterned after the academic year. I write my 'goals to achieve' here. After a month,  I will do a self-evaluation. Its quite fulfilling. But it requires a lot of work. I'm too lazy to do it every now and then. After two months, I stopped. I realized I can't maintain a journal or a planner. Saaaad. But I will try to change that lifestyle next semester. This has to be a planner semester.

----

I have been thinking also if I should work again as a student assistant. This time, I want to work in the Graduate Program Office of the College of Arts and Science or GPAS. I need to buy a new phone. My current phone reboots itself whenever it wants to. It also has this 'sim card registration failed' syndrome. I hate this phone but I can't buy a replacement.  I still have a spare phone as part of my postpaid freebie but that phone is like a stone age phone. It hangs whenever I tried to send multiple messages. It sucks. Talking about my postpaid. I'm trying to control myself because my previous bill is 1,700 pesos. I pay my own bills. I can't maintain a plan like that. Anyway, let's all enjoy our semestralbreak!

I plan not to go to the memorial park this coming all soul's/saint's day. I'm not convinced why do I have to visit them.

I still don't know who should be voted as the next President in the coming election. As if. As if I can vote in 2010. Haha. Yeah, I still can't get over it. The fact that all my friends will be able to vote in 2010 makes it so hard for me to accept it. I was born January 1993. And that means, that I will not be 18 years old in 2010. Wala lang. Naalala ko lang. I'm politically aware naman COMELEC, can you please make me an exception? Haha.

----

I was not able to attend the UP Manila Student Summit. That's sad. Something happened with my mom. Aww. It was organized by the Office of Student Regent and REV-UP MANILA which is an alliance of different sectors in UP Manila.  It was held at the 8th Floor of Philippine General Hospital Social Hall with its theme as, "Consolidate our Ranks, Intensify our Fight for our Democratic Rights." It served as the Student Regent's way to consult us students of UPM with our grievances. It was also there where they made a draft of the UP MANILA DEMANDS which will be passed to the highest policy-making body of the UP system, the Board of Regents.  Sana nandun ako di'ba? I'd like to say sorry to Ate Ces, Ate Kamz and Ate Mia.

----

I'm now using Plurk, Tumblr, Twitter and Y! Meme for micro-blogging needs. Which will I choose to maintain kaya? Haha. In the coming weeks, I'll choose one. Kasi parang i'm just posting mirror blogs to different sites eh. And that's not good, I think. Parang you're just blogging in that site for the sake of it! Eek.

----

And oh, my mom has four free tickets for a trip to Corregidor. And you know what? It was given to her by Avelino Razon, the Presidential Adviser for Peace Process. So, WTH? Right? Rumors said that he's planning to run for the coming election as the mayor of the city of Manila. Gah. Premature campaigning much. My mother is a PTCA Federation President. It's not my mom's first time for these kind of things. She was invited too by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando, Manila Councilor Numero Lim, Manila Vice Mayor Francisco Domagaso, and Manila Representative Jaime Lopez. Spell patronage politics.

006. Student Assistant

I'm currently a Student Assistant in the best department in UP Manila, Department of Social Science. (Hahahaaa! :D) Its not that hard naman though ang haba ng working hours. This is for summer lang naman, hopefully. I have to answer the telephone every now and then (which is so fun!), to distribute/release class cards to those who are so masipag to get them, to deliver outgoing files to their right places, to inform professors of something or sometimes everything, to supervise/manage the reservation of DSS' equipments and of course, to do anything that they want me to do.  I applied for the student assistanship because I will be in school rin naman for most of the summer dahil FBC na ako. :D

007. FBC

Yeapp. I'm a Freshman Block Coordinator na. I'll be handling the BioChemistry block (WTF!) and i'll also help them adjust to college life (Awww). I will also help them finish their Physical and Dental Examination and their Enrolment. In short, I'll be with them most of their freshman days. Hahahaha! :D What a punishment for them! Hahaha. XD

008. CS

I'm so happy that I finally achieved something after my elementary days. Hahaa. This is a surprise for me because I got 4.0 in my Math 11. Luckily, I've passed the removal exams. At parang hindi pa ako masaya, ginawa pa akong CS. To all those na non-UP students, CS stands for College Scholar which is the same as the Dean's Lister in other Universities. :D Am i over-celebrating?

009. The Effing 'Fourth Way'

Eff. Talagang walang kinabukasan ang Pilipinas sa set of legislators natin ngayon sa House of Representatives. WTF! House Resolution 737 and 1109 are craps. I understand a handful of things naman. Hahaaa. Changing the economic provision to benefit the foreigners is not a good idea, its like selling the Philippines to other countries. Soon it will be Philippines run by the Japanese or the Americans. (The Republic of the Philippines by the Government of Japan/America) Hahaaa. XD As if hindi pa bad idea ang pag-change sa economic provision, gumawa pa kayo ng FOUTH WAY. Eff! Bicameral ang Congress natin. Elementary pa lang, alam na yan.

010. DLSU College of Law

Let's see after five years. :D Maganda naman ang roster of faculty.
